I'm guessing that everyone who knew or knew of Anthony Bourdain was completely shocked to hear the news about his passing last Friday. I was of course sad for Kate Spade as I knew her work as a designer and heard about Avicii's music. Bourdain's passing affected me more than anyone else. I never met him before, but I felt like I knew him personally just by watching his shows or reading his book, Kitchen Confidential. I finally finished reading the last few pages of the book this morning.
I spent my entire day in a gloomy mood. The last time I felt like this for someone I didn't know personally was after Prince or Michael Jackson died. I had to drive over to Proof Bakery for a pastry to cheer me up that morning. Bourdain was a guy I admired as he had my dream job. He lived the life many people wanted aspired to live. I thought he lived a happy and content life. I thought traveling and eating was the key to happiness and living a good life. We can only make assumptions about what was going through his mind. I do hope his pain wasn't caused by the actions of someone else leaked by the press. In these circumstances, I can't help but to think what his loved ones are going through right now, especially his young daughter. Anthony Bourdain didn't start off appreciating Los Angeles. Most people don't. I've met people who have lived here for two years and still hate it. One gentleman told me, "it's the people." I responded that you haven't met the right people or you're hanging around the wrong side of town. Even in the San Fernando Valley, I find the people I talk to who live in the northern part the SFV to be much friendlier. I think in time and with an open mind for exploration, Los Angeles will grow on most people. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have not grown tired of it. I'm still discovering something new every day. I know since Bourdain's passing, some of you have probably had an In-N-Out Burger to honor him, I know I did on Friday as my comfort food.
